What to do during a layover in Istanbul?
A few hours between flights at IST? The airport is far from the centre, but the metro leaves from beneath the terminal and Hagia Sophia is just over an hour away. Here are nine ideas, with exact directions from the airport.

Before heading into town
First question: can you enter Türkiye? Passports from the European Union (except Cyprus), the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Japan and many other countries are visa-exempt for a short stay. Other passports require an e-Visa requested online before travel, only on the official website www.evisa.gov.tr. The official Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs list gives the rule for each nationality.
Second question: how much time do you really have? The airport is around forty kilometres from the old city: between the aircraft, border, travel and returning to the gate, a seven-hour layover rarely leaves more than two hours in the city.
Plan my layover with LAYOVOTo reach the city, metro M11 leaves from beneath the terminal and reaches Gayrettepe in around thirty minutes, with a train roughly every twenty minutes from 6 h to midnight. There, line M2 heads towards Taksim, Şişhane (Galata) and Vezneciler (Grand Bazaar). Pay with the İstanbulkart, sold in the station.
Flying Turkish Airlines with a connection of 6 to 24 hours? The airline offers Touristanbul, a free guided city tour including meals, subject to conditions.
The time shown runs from the terminal exit to the destination, including the wait for the metro. M11 timetables and duration come from the airport’s official website; durations between stations, taxis and admission prices are LAYOVO estimates.

Foreign visitors enter through the galleries, where you can see golden Byzantine mosaics, enormous calligraphic medallions and light falling through the dome’s forty windows.

A good habit: leave some breathing room
The best layover gets you back to the airport relaxed, rather than taking in the most sights. Choose one neighbourhood, Sultanahmet or Galata, and leave a generous margin for the return: the airport is far away, traffic is unpredictable and departure checks take time.
