6 unusual places to discover Istanbul
Houses in every colour, a market on the Asian shore, tea above the Golden Horn, antique shops and wooden-house villages beside the Bosphorus… Six places away from the queues.

Istanbul as its residents know it
Already seen Hagia Sophia? This layover is a chance to discover another city: the Golden Horn’s colourful neighbourhoods, markets on the Asian shore and the Bosphorus’s wooden-house villages. All these places are free.
A good habit: choose one place. Çukurcuma is the easiest by metro; Kadıköy and Kuzguncuk require a ferry, while Balat, Pierre Loti and Arnavutköy require a bus or taxi.
Plan my layover with LAYOVOThe time shown runs from the terminal exit to the destination, including waiting time. Several places are far from the metro: a taxi is often simplest. Durations, buses, taxis and prices are LAYOVO estimates to be verified.

Between Taksim and the Bosphorus, these two sloping neighbourhoods are a haven for Istanbul’s artists and cats: antique shops stacked to the ceiling, bookshops, small terraces and staircases plunging towards the sea.
