What to do during a layover in Singapore?

A few hours between flights at Changi? Singapore is one of the easiest cities to visit during a layover: a direct metro connection, often straightforward formalities and everything less than an hour away. Here are nine ideas, with exact directions from the airport.

Before heading into town

First question: can you enter Singapore? Most passport holders do not need a visa for a short stay, but you must complete the SG Arrival Card online within the three days before arrival. It is free, only on the official website. You then clear immigration through automated gates, often in a few minutes.

Second question: how much time do you really have? Between the aircraft, checks, travel and returning to the gate, a six-hour layover rarely leaves more than three hours in the city.

Plan my layover with LAYOVO

To reach the city, the metro (MRT) leaves from the station at terminals 2 and 3: one stop to Expo (Downtown line) or Tanah Merah (East West line), then you are in the centre in 40 to 50 minutes, for 2 to 3 dollars. Contactless bank cards are all you need to pay. By taxi or Grab, allow around thirty minutes.

The airport also offers a free guided tour of Singapore, lasting 2 h 30 by coach, for passengers with connections of 5 h 30 to 24 h.

How to read the directions

The time shown runs from the terminal 2 or 3 exit to the destination, including the wait for the metro; add 5 to 10 min from terminal 1 and 20 min from terminal 4 (shuttle). First and last metro times come from Changi’s official website; durations between stations are LAYOVO estimates.

Giant steel trees covered in plants, suspended walkways and, beneath two enormous conservatories, a mist-covered mountain with the tallest indoor waterfall you will ever see: welcome to Singapore’s most spectacular garden.

The outdoor gardens and Supertrees are free and open from early morning until late evening. If you have a little more time, Cloud Forest is the conservatory not to miss, a cool retreat after the heat outside.

The Merlion, half lion and half fish, spouts water facing the bay, with Marina Bay Sands’ three towers linked by their ship-shaped roof in the background. It is Singapore’s postcard view, and it is even more beautiful in person.

Walk around the bay along the promenade: the Helix Bridge, the lotus-shaped museum, the business district’s towers. It is all flat, shaded in places, and free.

On the 56th floor, on the ship-shaped roof resting across the three towers, the observation deck offers the city’s most famous view: the bay, gardens, port and dozens of cargo ships offshore.

The famous infinity pool is reserved for hotel guests, but the observation deck is open to everyone with a ticket. Go late in the day to watch the city transition from daylight to lights.

Red lanterns, shophouses with colourful shutters and the scent of incense: Chinatown is the liveliest neighbourhood for a first walk. Pagoda Street and its stalls lead towards temples just steps from one another.

The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, all red and gold, houses a revered relic and a rooftop orchid garden. Directly opposite, the city’s oldest Hindu temple surprises visitors with its tower covered in deities.

In Singapore, some of the best food costs… just a few dollars, at hawker centres: halls filled with small stalls, each specialising in one dish. Chicken rice, laksa, char kway teow: UNESCO has even listed this culture as intangible heritage.

Lau Pa Sat, beneath its Victorian cast-iron structure among the towers, is the easiest to reach from the metro. In the evening, the neighbouring street closes to cars and fills with satay grills.

A good habit: leave some breathing room

The best layover gets you back to the airport relaxed, rather than taking in the most sights. Choose a neighbourhood, check the last metro (around 23 h 15) and leave some margin: checks in Singapore are fast, but the airport is enormous.
