6 unusual places to discover Dubai

Art galleries in former warehouses, flamingos facing skyscrapers, the beach where locals swim… Six places away from shopping malls, easy to reach from the airport.

The Dubai you do not see on postcards

Already know the Burj Khalifa? This layover is a chance to discover another city: Al Quoz’s artists, the Creek at sunset and the beaches where Dubai residents spend their weekends. Most of these places are free or nearly free.

A good habit: choose one place. Al Mamzar and Ras Al Khor are a quarter of an hour from the airport by taxi, ideal for a short layover; Alserkal takes a little more time.

How to read the directions

The time shown runs from the terminal 3 exit to the destination, including the wait for the metro. Several places are far from a station: a taxi is often simplest. Durations and prices are LAYOVO estimates; it is very hot for much of the year, so allow extra time for walking.

In the middle of Al Quoz’s industrial area, former warehouses have become the heart of Dubai’s art scene: galleries, studios, coffee roasters and an independent cinema around shaded courtyards.

Far from the shopping malls, this is creative Dubai, where an exhibition and a speciality coffee are just a few steps apart.

A quarter of an hour from the airport, at the head of the Creek, a reserve of mangroves and mudflats welcomes hundreds of flamingos, with Downtown’s towers on the horizon.

Free wooden hides let you watch them up close without disturbing them. One of the city’s most surprising contrasts.

In a traditional Al Fahidi house, a small museum tells the story of coffee, born on the other side of the Red Sea, and of its Arabic ritual, scented with cardamom.

See old grinders and coffee pots, and taste coffee roasted on site while sitting on cushions.

Here, in a house beside the sea, seven emirates signed their union on 2 December 1971. The large flag still flies over the square.

The museum, whose roof evokes an open manuscript, tells through images and personal accounts the birth of a country transformed in fifty years.

Locals’ favourite beach park is a quarter of an hour from the airport: shaded lawns, coves with calm water and views of Sharjah’s towers.

Less touristy than Jumeirah, it is the ideal place for a proper swim during a short layover.
